Anxiety/Panic

Anxiety disorders cover a wide spectrum of behaviors and sensations ranging from nervousness over an upcoming event such as a test, to sudden and unexpected panic with an accompanying feeling that you are about to die.  There are techniques that can help sufferers in all aspects of anxiety. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and obsessive compulsive disorders and specific fears such as fear of flying are also under the umbrella of “anxiety”.  Agoraphobia is an aspect of panic disorder that makes it hard for sufferers to be in public places such as a grocery store or bank.

For people who have experienced panic disorder, whether or not it is associated with agoraphobia, is a horrifying experience with shortness of breath, racing heart, chest pains, choking or smothering, a sense of doom, fear of going crazy and fear of dying. There is intense apprehension and physical sensations. After one of these attacks, the fear of having another attack adds to the sufferer’s anxiety in general.

It is believed that most anxiety stems from trauma from the clients past that has been suppressed until something (mostly unknown) triggers the panic attack or general anxiety symptom.  I suggest you click on the Trauma section of this website to find out more. It is important to note that the trauma doesn’t have to be an event such as a rape or a car accident, though those things often result in anxiety in one or more forms.  It can also mean being in a “one down” relationship over a number of years or having surgery as a child—an event you may not remember as being traumatic. But your body and your brain remember.

Treatment for anxiety, like depression, often involves both medication and talk therapy. There are medications for anxiety that are quick acting and meant to be used as the sufferer faces an anxiety riddled task such as speaking before an audience or as a panic attack is coming on. Xanex and Ativan are a couple of examples. Dependence can develop so these medications are meant for short term relief.  A number of antidepressants are also used for relief of anxiety: Cymbalta, Effexor, Lexapro, Zoloft, Paxil, and Prozac.  For those who resist medication, click on the spiritual section and check out some of the reading material.
